Etrigan The Demon : The Demon #1 (August 1972)
Created by : Jack “The King” Kirby
When I was a little kid, I grew up in a weird head space, I was always in and out of the hospital for various surgeries. I spent a lot of time reading comics, most of my favorites were the beautifully crafted stories written and drawn by the ever amazing Jack “The King” Kirby.
The Duality of Jason Blood and his split soul other half Etrigan the Demon always made me happy. I would lay in the bed hooked up to all the tubes and devices and whisper the words…
"Change! Change, O form of man!
Release the might from fleshy mire!
Boil the blood in heart of fire!
Gone! Gone! — the form of man —
Rise, the Demon Etrigan!! ”
In the hopes I would change from the broken child I was to some demon who could spew fire and climb buildings with grace and ease.
It never happened, but that was the mantra that would keep me going. In the world of comic’s its rather hard to find someone who can capture a part of your child hood with such deft acuracy, but there are a few out there who can do it. Most notably…
Evan “Doc” Shaner / Doc “The Prince” Shaner really captures the lines of Kirby and his use of color and light really makes all his art sing.
And of course…
The Always Talented Drew Moss draws the best monsters hands down, and there is no way to tell me otherwise so do not even try.
